Graphify and Claude Code

Claude Code finds the file.Graphify shows what it touches.

Claude Code already greps, reads files and follows definitions. Graphify adds a graph of how the code and docs connect, so a cross-file question starts from the connections instead of a search. For small repositories and single-file edits, Claude Code alone is enough.

Checked against graphify v0.9.96 and its GitHub issues on 27 October 2026.

When it helps

Pick by the question.

Add Graphify when

  • The question crosses files: who calls this, what breaks, how does A reach B
  • The repository is large, or new to you
  • The answer lives partly in docs, specs or schemas
  • Several pull requests are open against the same code

Claude Code alone is enough when

  • The repository is small
  • You already know the file, or the edit stays in one file
  • One grep answers the question
What it adds

Four things Claude Code gets from the graph.

  1. 01

A map of how the code connects

Callers, callees, the path between two functions and what a change reaches come back from one query, with file and line. Query output is capped at 2,000 tokens by default.

How Claude Code alone compares. Claude Code greps, reads the files that match, and follows definitions one hop at a time.

  2. 02

    The docs behind the code

Design docs, PDFs and Office files sit in the same graph as the functions they describe, so a question about a requirement reaches the code that implements it.

How Claude Code alone compares. It reads the files it opens. The link between a doc and the code is left for it to find.

  3. 03

Every link says how it was found

Each edge is EXTRACTED when it is written in the source, INFERRED when Graphify worked it out, with or without a model, and AMBIGUOUS when the model pass could not settle it.

How Claude Code alone compares. A grep match is text. Claude Code judges what each match means.

  4. 04

    Built once, on your machine

The code graph is built by tree-sitter on your machine with no model tokens, and a git hook keeps it current. Each question starts from the graph instead of a fresh search.

How Claude Code alone compares. Each new session starts its search from scratch.

Issues #985 and #580

What users measured, and what changed.

In #985 and #580, users found Claude Code alone gave similar answers with the same or fewer tokens. Two causes were found and fixed. The installer told Claude Code to read the whole graph report before every search, which cost 12,000 to 25,000 tokens a question; PR #891 removed that on 16 May 2026. A hook reminder repeated on every search; v0.9.87 capped it on 12 October 2026.

After the first fix, a test question on a 1,500-file monorepo took one tool call instead of four, at the same 30,000 tokens as Claude Code alone. That is parity on a lookup, not a saving, and this page does not claim more. The gain shows on questions that cross files: on ERPNext, about a million lines, one Graphify tool raised an agent's key-fact coverage from 70.8% to 82.0% against grep and file reads, on six graded questions.

Set it up

Three commands, so Claude Code uses the graph.

Install with uv tool install graphifyy, then run graphify install to add the /graphify skill to Claude Code. In your repository, run graphify claude install: it adds a Graphify section to CLAUDE.md and PreToolUse hooks that point Claude Code at the graph before it searches. Without that step, Claude Code may never call the graph.

Then type /graphify . in Claude Code. The code maps on your machine with no API key, and graphify hook installkeeps the graph current on every commit. Or connect the repository to Graphify Cloud's free plan and use the hosted MCP server.

FAQ

Graphify and Claude Code: questions

What people ask before they add a graph to Claude Code.

  • On large or unfamiliar repositories, and on questions that cross files, yes: who calls this, what breaks if it changes, which doc explains it. On a small repository, or an edit in a file you already know, Claude Code alone is enough, and Graphify adds little.

  • It can, but not on every question. Building the code graph costs no model tokens, and a query returns at most 2,000 tokens by default. On a single lookup, Claude Code alone can use the same or fewer: after the fix in PR #891, a one-question test on a 1,500-file monorepo used the same 30,000 tokens with and without Graphify, in one tool call instead of four. Graphify's published code result measures accuracy: on ERPNext, key-fact coverage rose from 70.8% to 82.0% on six graded questions.

  • Yes, they do different jobs. CLAUDE.md holds your instructions and conventions; Graphify holds the map of how the code connects. graphify claude install adds a short Graphify section to CLAUDE.md that tells Claude Code when to use the graph.

  • A language server answers one hop: where a symbol is defined and where it is referenced. Graphify answers questions that span the codebase, such as every path between two functions, what a change reaches and which doc explains a function. Use both.

  • Usually because only graphify install ran. That installs the /graphify skill. Run graphify claude install in the repository too: it adds the CLAUDE.md section and PreToolUse hooks that point Claude Code at the graph before it searches. Then build the graph with /graphify . inside Claude Code.

  • Yes. Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and others each have their own install command, listed on graphify.com/integrations. The graph is the same; only the setup differs.
