Graphify Claude Code setup: hosted MCP or local skill?

· 4 minute read

Graphify is a code knowledge graph that Claude Code can query instead of grepping through your repository. There are two ways to set up Graphify Claude Code support: connect the hosted MCP server, or install the local skill from the open-source Graphify CLI. Both work. They suit different teams, and this guide helps you pick one.

Our earlier guide on how to give Claude Code a code knowledge graph explains why a graph helps. This one is about the choice.

Use the hosted MCP server when your code is on GitHub or GitLab and you want graphs rebuilt on every push and shared with teammates. Use the local skill when the code lives only on your machine, must stay offline, or you want no account. Many developers start local on one project, then move team repositories to hosted.

| | Hosted MCP | Local skill | | --- | --- | --- | | Setup | One claude mcp add command and OAuth | uv tool install graphifyy, then graphify claude install | | Graph built by | Graphify, on every push to the default branch | You, with /graphify . | | Where the graph lives | Your Graphify workspace | graphify-out/ in the repository | | Shared with a team | Yes | Through git, if you commit it | | Extras | Pull request reviews, formal verification on GitHub, combined repositories | Fully offline code-only builds |

First connect a repository at app.graphify.com and wait for its status to show Indexed. Then add the server to Claude Code:

bash
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user graphify https://api.graphify.com/mcp

--scope user makes it available in every project. To share it with your team instead, commit an .mcp.json file at the repository root:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "graphify": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://api.graphify.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Start Claude Code, run /mcp, choose graphify and select Authenticate. Your browser opens for sign-in. There is no API key. The Claude Code integration docs cover scopes and a default repository setting.

Install the package and register it with Claude Code:

bash
uv tool install graphifyy
graphify claude install

That writes a Graphify section to CLAUDE.md and registers PreToolUse hooks in .claude/settings.json. The hooks remind Claude Code to check the graph before it runs a search or reads files. Then open Claude Code in the repository and send:

text
/graphify .

The graph lands in graphify-out/. Code is parsed on your machine with tree-sitter. Add --project to the install command to write the skill into the repository so teammates get it too. Anthropic's Claude Code MCP documentation explains how servers and scopes work if you also want the local MCP server.

How do I check that Graphify is working in Claude Code?Link to How do I check that Graphify is working in Claude Code?

For hosted MCP, run claude mcp list in a terminal and look for graphify marked Connected. Then ask Claude Code to list your Graphify repositories. For the local skill, confirm graphify-out/graph.json exists after /graphify ., and ask a structural question. Answers should cite file paths you can open.

Good test prompts:

  • "Use Graphify to show what calls the function that parses config."
  • "What would change if I renamed this class?"
  • "Which modules depend on the payments package?"

Open the cited lines before you trust an answer.

What if Claude Code shows two sets of Graphify tools?Link to What if Claude Code shows two sets of Graphify tools?

Usually the server is configured twice, for example a user-scope entry plus a project .mcp.json entry, or the hosted server plus a local one. Keep one per project. The hosted and local servers use different tool names, so duplicates are easy to spot in /mcp. Remove the extra entry with claude mcp remove graphify.

For other errors, the docs have a troubleshooting table for sign-in, missing repositories and scope problems. Our post on change impact analysis with a code graph shows questions worth asking once it works.

Connect a repository at app.graphify.com and run the claude mcp add command above. Or go local:

bash
uv tool install graphifyy
graphify claude install

Prefer to stay local? Run uv tool install graphifyy for the open-source CLI. Open-source Graphify is licensed under Apache 2.0. Does Graphify work with Claude Code on Windows?Link to Does Graphify work with Claude Code on Windows?

Yes. graphify install detects Windows and installs the PowerShell version of the skill. The hosted MCP server works the same on every OS.

Do I need an API key for Graphify in Claude Code?Link to Do I need an API key for Graphify in Claude Code?

No. Hosted MCP uses OAuth in the browser. Local code-only graphs need no key.

Can Claude Code use Graphify across several repositories?Link to Can Claude Code use Graphify across several repositories?

Yes. Hosted Graphify can combine repositories in one workspace, so Claude Code can follow calls across them.

Does the local skill send my code anywhere?Link to Does the local skill send my code anywhere?

Code is parsed locally and sent nowhere. Claude Code itself sends what it reads to Anthropic under its own terms.
