Graphify open source vs hosted: which one to use

· 4 minute read

Graphify open source vs hosted is a choice between two ways to run the same code knowledge graph. Open-source Graphify is the graphifyy package on PyPI, under Apache 2.0, and it builds the graph on your machine. Hosted Graphify indexes your GitHub or GitLab repositories and serves the graph to your agents over MCP.

Both give your AI coding agent the same kind of map: functions, classes and files, linked by calls, imports and references. They differ in where the graph is built, how it stays current and what your team can do with it.

Use hosted Graphify when your code is on GitHub or GitLab and you want the graph rebuilt on every push, shared with your team and used for pull request reviews. Use the Graphify CLI when the project lives only on your machine, must stay offline, or you want to build and keep the graph yourself with no account.

What does the Graphify CLI do well?Link to What does the Graphify CLI do well?

The Graphify CLI keeps everything on your machine. A code-only build parses files with tree-sitter and makes no model calls, so it needs no API key. It supports about 40 languages. It also ships skills for many assistants, so graphify install --platform cursor or graphify claude install sets up the agent side.

It is the right pick for private code, air-gapped work and experiments. You can also commit graphify-out/ so teammates share one graph through git.

bash
uv tool install graphifyy
graphify install

What does hosted Graphify add?Link to What does hosted Graphify add?

Hosted Graphify removes the build and upkeep. Connect a repository, and every push to the default branch starts a new build. Teammates sign in to the same workspace, and since 10 August a teammate can request access to a GitHub organization that is already connected.

It also adds pull request work that needs a server. Reviews read the graph, not only the diff, so they reach callers a change can affect. Formal verification compares each supported changed function with its previous version. It either proves they behave the same within checked bounds or finds a concrete input that differs. Since 20 August, replies such as @graphify wrong <finding> teach reviews what to skip. See pull request reviews.

Can I use both?Link to Can I use both?

Yes, but not for the same project in the same agent. Two servers with overlapping tools confuse the agent. A common pattern is the CLI for private side projects and hosted Graphify for team repositories. Switching a repository later is a configuration change: your application code stays the same.

Our explainer on what a code knowledge graph is covers what the graph holds in both forms.
